Initially designed by William P. Yarborough in 1941 for use in the 501st Parachute Test Battalion. The silhouette is also known as the paratrooper boot, or the "Corcoran", named after the J. F. Corcoran Shoe Company, one of the original manufacturers.

The machinery used for the Goodyear Welting process was invented by Charles Goodyear Jr., the son of Charles Goodyear in 1869. It is considered the gold standard welt in the high-end shoe market today.
